Interim Headteacher required at short notice

When we were unable to recruit a permanent Headteacher for the Summer Term I turned to Education Futures and asked them to locate an interim Headteacher. I spoke with Jarrod Gaines and had a broad discussion about our school, the current challenges and the quality and character of the person we needed. The school was in a difficult situation where staff, parents and governors were hugely anxious about the term, having lost their headteacher who retired. Jarrods understanding of school dynamics was clear as through one conversation he was able to identify some of the priorities we had.

Jarrod very quickly produced 3 excellent candidates. We shortlisted one who at short notice came to visit us at the school. The interim head met with other governors who were immediately won over by her professionalism, attitude, experience and knowledge. We had no hesitation in offering her the position and we were not disappointed in what she delivered. She put her heart and soul into the job in such a short time dealing with, amongst other things:

  • Serious health and safety issues that needed urgent attention
  • Supporting the governors and LA in recruiting a permanent Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher for September
  • Recruiting teachers and support staff for September
  • Opening the doors (literally) between two schools on the same sight
  • Working to get the best out of her Governing Body
  • Liaising effectively with the LA
  • Supporting her staff in the Children’s Centre through significant changes as part of an LA restructure and re-organisation of delivery of services
  • Working in partnership with the PTA
  • Raising the achievement in the school and giving the Year 6 children a final term at the school that they wouldn’t forget

Jarrod visited our school in the summer term and met with our interim head to discuss her progress and ensure that the remit given to Education Futures was being fulfilled. I was very impressed with this after care.

A South London authority had recently tried to recruit for permanent SEN service manager.

Adverts and known council contacts had not yielded the calibre of candidates that they required. Their existing service manager was now close to leaving and there was an urgent need for someone to replace the incumbent. With the timeframe, a search for a permanent appointment was not possible. We resolved to identify a current or recent SEN service manager that could start within weeks to guide the team through re-structuring and provide stability until a permanent appointment was made. We immediately put a small team on target to call SEN service manager contacts in and around London. Within 48 hours we had identified someone that was due to take early retirement and was not considering consultancy roles. After discussion of the role, the candidate was keen to take up the role. We introduced the candidate and client and a successful placement began. The client was very impressed with our ability to source such a high calibre candidate at short notice. This person is currently working with the substantive appointment candidate to ensure a seamless transition.

A large failing school in North London had recently appointed an executive principal to affect fast change.

In a discussion with the principal we were able to identify the specific skills gap in teaching and learning. As the principal began a programme of staff renewal, he needed someone with the experience of tough environments to work with him on improving standards. The school was in flux with lots of sensitive issues within the community and the established staff. The client asked  that we find an experienced head or principal who had a strong record of developing staff. The candidate needed to have the personality that would enable them to work with teachers, create buy in and change attitudes. Education Futures created a search plan that was nationwide. We sourced high performing individuals with traceable track records. Once we identified a shortlist, we conducted candidate assessments and presented one candidate. The candidate fitted the profile of person exactly and she is currently working with the principal to affect rapid change. The candidate contract has been extended for year and we are currently engaged in a retained search for the client for a senior member of SLT.
